The iPhone 8 has unquestionably been the most leaked as well as most anticipated iPhone in history. The underwhelming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus has led to a lot of pent up demand for a radically redesigned iPhone and if the myriad of rumours are anything to go by, the tenth anniversary iPhone 8 will bring with it a striking bezel-less design and a host of brand new features such as 3D face unlock and an OLED display.
Now it seems that Apple itself has confirmed some of these features inadvertently. Apple accidentally pushed the firmware for the HomePod out yesterday. Developers like Steve Troughton-Smith have been examining the code inside Apple's recently launched smart speakers and have found out that it contains most of the codebase for iPhones inside it.
The code contains several references to the term "BKFaceDetect" in which BK most probably stands for Biometric Kit (taking Apple's love for the work 'Kit' into account - ARKit, HomeKit and so on). The code also contains references to an infrared camera which would presumably be used by the phone to detect your face in the dark.
This ties in well with earlier reports from Bloomberg which claimed that Apple is working on a system that allows users to log-in, launch secure applications and authenticate payments by scanning their face powered by a 3D sensor. The report also claimed that the 3D face unlocking feature will be able to unlock the iPhone 8 in just a few hundred milliseconds.
In addition, the HomePod code also contains an image confirming that the iPhone 8 will have an edge-to-edge screen and a bezel-less design. The image also seemingly confirms the 'notch' at the top which will house the front camera and the sensors. It also shows that the iPhone 8 does will not come with a physical home button. Will the iPhone 8 have an in-screen fingerprint sensor or not is still a mystery with various analysts still at odds about the issue.
Along with the striking redesign, the iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition is also expected to come with a smart connector for accessories such as a VR headset, an updated 3D touch module, updated cameras with AR features wireless charging, rear facing laser technology for AR apps and IP68 waterproofing
